Auf Anfrage des Labels MoWax veröffentlicht Shadow die zwei Singles "In/Flux" und "Lost and Found". Letztere entsteht in Zusammenarbeit mit DJ Krush. Ein neuer Stern am Beat-Himmel ist geboren, der Sound wird als Instrumental-Hip Hop bezeichnet. Shadow und Krush gelten seitdem als Wegbereiter des Trip Hops. Mit Einflüssen aus Jazz, Hip Hop, Funk, Ambient und Rock definiert DJ Shadow einen eigenen Stil und stößt damit auf großes Interesse in der Underground-Szene. Weitere Singles folgen und 1996 erscheint auf Mo Wax sein erstes Album. "Endtroducing" entwickelt sich zum Klassiker und macht Shadow zur Vorzeigefigur der Downtempo-Breakbeater. Mit über 500 Platten, die er auf "Endtroducing" verarbeitet, schreibt Shadow auch Hip Hop-Geschichte.
